West Leyden, Fall 2023 - Greg Pflieger, retired law enforcement officer turned SPO, organized a remarkable golf tournament named "Birdies for Books" to raise funds for the Scholastic Book fair. The event took place at the scenic Woodgate Pines Golf Course and attracted 84 enthusiastic golfers who were eager to support this noble cause.
The idea to raise money for the book fair struck Greg, an avid golfer, as the perfect opportunity to combine his passion for golf with his commitment to education. Without hesitation, he contacted Shawn Andrews, the manager of Woodgate Pines Golf Course, and secured a date for the tournament.
The first annual "Birdies for Books" golf tournament kicked off on a sunny July morning. Participants generously donated a portion of their entry fee, while additional funds were raised through a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and camaraderie as golfers teed off, knowing that their contributions would directly benefit elementary students.
All proceeds from the tournament were turned over to Kelly Smith, a dedicated member of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). Greg and his team decided to split the funds between West Leyden and Boonville elementary schools, ensuring that every child had the opportunity to purchase books at the Scholastic Book fair.
Greg's journey as an SPO began in 2019 after retiring from a distinguished 31-year career in law enforcement. Joining West Leyden as an SPO proved to be a life-changing decision for him. The warm reception and appreciation he received from the students and staff made him feel valued and motivated every day.
