Mrs. Crystalanne Boots' first-grade class at West Leyden Elementary had an unforgettable day of discovery and excitement as they explored the fascinating world of geology with a special visitor.  John Boncella, Jr., the father of Mrs. Boots, captivated young minds by sharing his firsthand experiences working in an Alaskan gold mine in the early 1980s.

Students were amazed as Mr. Boncella showcased real gold, minerals, and rocks from the Apollo and Sitka mines. The hands-on learning experience allowed students to try their luck at panning for gold, handle a massive whale bone recovered from the North Pacific Ocean, and examine fascinating specimens of petrified wood, copper pyrite, and quartz. From tiny samples to large rock formations, students marveled at the natural wonders of Alaska.

As a special treat, each student took home their very own piece of Alaska—a small mineral rock, generously provided by Mr. Boncella. It was a "quartz-a-lot" of fun, and the students walked away with a newfound appreciation for geology and the treasures hidden within the Earth.

West Leyden Elementary extends a heartfelt thank you to Mr. Boncella for his time, generosity, and passion for sharing his knowledge. This hands-on lesson in geology will surely be remembered for years to come!
